On Monday, April 30, CAM Raleigh’s beautiful contemporary museum space will be filled with some beautiful contemporary music through a cutting-edge musical performance by New Music Raleigh. NMR (founded by husband and wife team, Shawn Galvin and Karen Strittmatter Galvin) is a collective of both classical and rock musicians dedicated to the presentation of innovative classical music of living composers.
New Music Raleigh strives to break down the barriers between musical genres and continues to push the audience’s expectations and experiences into an area that is fresh, new and entertaining. Often performed in unique venues such as restaurants, bars, clubs and museums, the group hopes to provide a familiar space in which to present something new. Since its founding in 2009, NMR has collaborated with celebrated indie rock artists, Lost in the Trees and Shara Worden and has performed works by numerous contemporary composers. Defying pre-conceived notions of what musical genres are, Craig Jarvis of the News and Observer referred to NMR as “Classical music you might actually call hip.”
Explore this classical/indie music fusion for yourself. Their next big project is a two concert series presented in partnership with the Mallarme Chamber Players, on April 30 at CAM Raleigh and then again on May 6 at Motorco Music Hall in Durham.
“This concert will have a gritty industrial vein running through it. Found materials including fence posts, tall metal pipes, and steel plates are some of the instruments that will be used.” Says NMR curator and musician, Karen Strittmatter Galvin, “And our closing piece, Workers’ Union, explores the importance of the individual within the group: each performer plays exactly the same rhythms, but completely makes up the notes, playing as though theirs is absolutely the most important part. It’s going to be high-energy and loud. I can’t wait.”
The show will feature music composed by David Stork, Scott Lindroth, Judd Greenstein, John Supko and Louis Andriessen (with an additional World Premiere piece by David Kirkland Garner at the Durham concert). Participating musicians are Karen Strittmatter Galvin, violin; Shawn Galvin, percussion; Eric Hirsh, keyboard; Kevin Miller, bass; William Robin, saxophone and David Maris, guitar.
