Fifth Annual Holt Brothers Playoff Party @ Reynolds Coliseum, NCSU | Raleigh | North Carolina | United States

Experience the excitement of the NFC and AFC Championship games with 2018 Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist Torry Holt and former NFL star Terrence Holt at this one-of-a-kind fundraiser to benefit kids with a parent fighting cancer. For those serious about their football, the game will be shown on the Jumbotron and on TVs inside Reynolds. The event also features celebrity athletes, the NFL’s First Ladies of Football, music, games, food and drink. Attendees can also participate in a raffle to win two tickets to Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis.

This annual event has raised nearly $600,000 for the Holt Brothers Foundation since its inception four years ago, and during that time, those funds have helped more than 1,000 kids through the Foundation’s KidsCan! and Camp Kesem programs. The Holt Brothers Foundation was started in memory of Torry and Terrence’s mother, Ojetta Holt-Shoffner, and supports programs for children with a parent with cancer.

Urban Bush Women Hair & Other Stories @ NCSU Stewart Theatre

Urban Bush Women Hair & Other Stories @ NCSU Stewart Theatre | Raleigh | North Carolina | United States

Since Urban Bush Women (UBW) burst onto the dance scene in 1984, the company has made an indelible mark on the field (and beyond) with bold, innovative and demanding works that challenge long-held assumptions about the power of dance.

Their latest work, Hair and Other Stories, is no exception. Celebrated Artistic Director and choreographer, Jawole Willa Jo Zoller, together with the inimitable UBW ensemble collaborate on a striking dance/theatre work which highlights the beauty and strength of the human spirit. Drawing on UBW’s visceral and thoughtful approach to co-creation, Hair and Other Stories uses humor, music and their powerful movement to explore self-image, race and gender inequality – all through the lens of hair, primarily that of African-American women. Deftly combining athleticism with intellect, the dancers gracefully pull the audience into the conversation. They invite you into their living rooms, their kitchens, their salons, and you can’t help but accept!

Marc Bamuthi Joseph / The Living Word Project /peh-LO-tah/ @ NCSU Stewart Theatre | Raleigh | North Carolina | United States

A favorite on NC State LIVE’s stage and across the globe, writer/performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph has garnered countless awards and critical acclaim for his passionate productions that seamlessly weave spoken word, contemporary movement and hip-hop (most recently he was selected as a prestigious TEDGlobal 2017 Fellow). Joseph is at it again. With /peh-LO-tah/, he pairs soccer with performance to create a powerful effect. Camaraderie, pride and tradition across cultures are all in play.

Inspired by memories of playing soccer growing up, Joseph draws on his experiences as a child of Haitian immigrants. The multimedia work, developed with and directed by Michael John Garcés and choreographed by Stacey Printz, chronicles Joseph’s travels to World Cups in South Africa and Brazil. Choreography inspired by soccer technique complements the musical narratives performed live in English and Portuguese. Performers are accompanied by original music composed by Tommy Shepherd with selected vocal arrangements by Yaw Agyeman of the Black Monks of Mississippi, altogether creating an action-packed meditation on freedom and citizenship with “the beautiful game” at its core.

L.A. Theatre Works: The Mountaintop By Katori Hall @ NCSU Stewart Theatre | Raleigh | North Carolina | United States

On the evening of April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated outside room 306 of The Lorraine Motel in Memphis. What happened inside room 306 the night before the killing is a mystery. In her internationally acclaimed play, The Mountaintop, playwright Katori Hall imagines what may have transpired in the overnight hours between the legendary civil rights leader and a seemingly inconsequential hotel maid.

Winner of the prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Play, The Mountaintop, is rife with humor and political jabs, while giving us a glimpse at the human side of Martin Luther King Jr. Hours after his famed final speech, punctuated by the immortal line, “I’ve been to the mountaintop,” the celebrated Reverend reveals his hopes, regrets, and fears, creating a masterful bridge between mortality and immortality.
