The City of Raleigh Stormwater Management Division will hold a public meeting to provide an update to residents on the White Oak Lake reconstruction project. This $3 million dollar project is intended to reduce flooding in the area downstream of White Oak Lake by increasing the lake’s ability to store stormwater runoff.
During the meeting, City staff and the project’s design consultant, Dewberry Engineering, Inc., will give an update on the status of the project and present the current design plans. City staff also will seek feedback from residents at this time.
Reconstructing the White Oak Lake dam will change the lake’s normal water level by adjusting the dam’s riser and emergency spillway to provide a more controlled release of the lake’s water during and immediately following large rain events in order to reduce flooding downstream. The project also removes the lake from the construction footprint of the future North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) I-440 road widening project and will address the infrastructure needs for phase two of the Simmons Branch drainage improvement project. Construction for White Oak Lake is expected to start in summer 2018.
