Hillsborough Street is jumping into the holidays and encouraging us all to SHOP SMALL next week.

“Shopping small” on the Saturday after Thanksgiving is a tradition that celebrates small businesses and the folks who run and work in them. Started in 2010 to help small retailers struggling to recover from the recession, the movement has grown nationally with a record 112 million shoppers last year.

Normally, Black Friday marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season. But shopping closer to home the next day, on Small Business Saturday, helps both local small business and the community.

According to Civic Econimics, independent businesses recirculate more money locally than national chains, give more employment per dollar of revenue, keep profits in the community, and use a greater share of their revenue for charitable giving.

What’s not to like if you’re looking for a good return on your gift dollar? Shop Local Raleigh is celebrating the day with various offers around town and of course, Hillsborough Street has some great recommendations for shop small gift ideas or for just treating yourself before all the holiday hoopla.
