Colleges and Universities
The Triangle region is home to three of the nation’s top-ranking universities, with one of them right here in SouthWestRaleigh: North Carolina State University is centrally located and connected with the area through its Main and Centennial Campuses. Other higher learning institutions in SWR are Meredith College and William Peace University; and two historically black colleges, Shaw University and Saint Augustine’s University, are located just outside its boundaries.
Many of SouthWestRaleigh’s public schools are magnet schools. Elementary schools within SWR boundaries include AB Combs, Fred A Olds, and Wiley Elementary. The Exploris School teaches K-8, and Centennial Campus Middle School and Dillard Drive Middle School bridge to Athens Drive Magnet, Needham B. Broughton, and Raleigh Charter High Schools. SouthWestRaleigh is also home and close to a number of private schools.
SouthWestRaleigh has many opportunities for lifelong and recreational learning. The Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department offers a wide variety of programs and classes from the arts to sports and recreation. NCSU provides learning partnerships in a number of areas through their Outreach and Engagement Department as well as classes, study trips and lectures through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Wake Technical Community College offers personal interest classes in various locations around town as well as online.
