The Hillsborough Street Community Service Corporation (HSCSC) is organizing the first annual State Patty’s Day Scavenger Hunt. The event will take place on Hillsborough Street on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17th , from 6-10 pm.

HSCSC will also be collecting canned food the night of the event to donate to the Interfaith Food Shuttle. The scavenger hunt is designed to engage the community in a fun and creative way to explore all of the businesses on Hillsborough Street. Jeff Murison, Executive Director of the HSCSC, said “This event is a fun and free community builder that will grow each year and become a tradition for the Hillsborough Street community.”

Participation is free, but each canned food item donated will result in 5 additional bonus points, up to 50, to a team’s final score. Teams can also turn in receipts for food, beverage, and retail purchases made that night at businesses on Hillsborough Street and earn an extra 5 bonus points per receipt. Teams’ final score sheets must be turned in by 10pm in order to win.

A sample clue that could have been used in the event is “Jupiter, Mars and Venus. How many are their between us? This place may not have 5 moons or a crater, but a nutritious fruit drink they are able to cater. What color are their walls?” “The answer is found in a business on Hillsborough Street,” said Murison.

Registration stations for the scavenger hunt will be located at the Bell Tower Mart parking lot, Wachovia, and East Village’s parking lot. Groups or individuals participating in the hunt will be given clues, for which the answers can be found in the businesses along Hillsborough Street. There are 55 questions and a total of 180 points. Teams with the most correct answers and thus points will be awarded prizes, which include a trip to Las Vegas, dozens of gift certificates local businesses such as Sadlacks, Two Guys, The Alley, and Players Retreat, and many others.

“We hope that there will be a large turnout for the event and that students as well as local residents will participate” says NC State senior, John Newson, who is helping organize the event. “This new exciting event is a great chance for students, faculty and staff, and local residents to come out and learn more about what Hillsborough Street has to offer, while having fun and celebrating the Saint Patrick’s Day Holiday.” Newson said, “Participants are invited to stay on Hillsborough Street after the event and do an Irish jig up and down the street to celebrate the holiday.”
