This week The Saturday Market introduces several new products from The Buffaloe Milling Company, including cornmeal, biscuit mix, and a hot n spicy breader that would go great on the fish that you’ll be picking up at The Market. Buffaloe Milling Company, has an interesting history:
Buffaloe Milling Company, Inc located in Kittrell was founded around 1854. The gristmill began as so many other gristmills in North Carolina, it was a necessity to the survival of the people settled close by. People of the community would bring their corn to the mill to be ground into corn meal. As payment the mill, owner would keep a small toll of corn. The original owner was S R Hunt, a large landowner in the community.
The mill changed hands several times over the years. The present owner’s grandfather, Johnnie Moss, bought the mill in 1950. Giving the name Moss Corn Meal birth. In 1979 Mr. Moss sold the mill to his daughter and her husband, James and Marilove Spencer. The Spencer’s operated the mill until 1989. At this time their son J Daryl purchased the mill.
Daryl had worked with his parents since 1979, so knew the business well. With many new renovations over the years Buffaloe Milling, Inc has grown to sell its corn meal, breaders and hushpuppy mixes by direct delivery to stores and restaurants in the Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina areas. The company continues to enjoy growth while maintaining its sacred traditions.

The Saturday Market
Rebus Works gallery, located next to the Boylan Street Bridge, downtown Raleigh, began The Saturday Market at Rebus Works in April. The market continues weekly through November 19, 2011. The idea is to combine farmers, crafters, and food and beverage trucks in one location. Although the idea is not new, it is new to Raleigh. The Saturday Market offers a unique setting where vendors are set up along a meandering path, past the chicken coop and gardens, right in the heart of downtown Raleigh.
The Market has grown weekly, supported by the local neighborhoods and community. The Market features locally grown food and handmade products, with a focus on being kid friendly, and community oriented. The Saturday Market contains a chicken coop and garden area to educate children about sustainability, as well as a kid’s craft area, so parents can shop while their children are artistically stimulated. The Market also provides 2 classes of donation based yoga each week, and chair massages, providing a draw for folks of all ages, with a positive, local neighborhood feel.
The Saturday Market is located at 301-2 Kinsey Street, (next to the Boylan Street Bridge) Raleigh, NC and is open every Saturday from 9-2pm and will continue through November 19.
