Chamberlain St Playground is most notably known for being a popular place to play basketball. Usually a time doesn’t go by when I pass this park and a group of teens or college kids aren’t outside playing a pick-up game. Maybe it’s the surrounding neighborhood of family homes or the nearby student-rented duplexes and apartments, but it’s always exciting to see the courts in use (except for my most recent visit, post-rain).
Chamberlain St Playground is located at 500 Chamberlain St at the intersection of Chamberlain St and Everett Ave, one block west of Cameron Village. It has a small playground covered in a sandy base with a few teeter totters and diggers. There is also a picnic table and a small open grassy area. Most of the park is shaded by large trees and the nearby eyesore of a water tower.
The park has two full-size lighted basketball courts complete with lines and a small set of bleachers and a bench for spectators. As I mentioned earlier, this is a very popular spot for playing basketball even though pictures from my most recent visit suggest otherwise.
So, grab your sneakers, a few friends, and a basketball and meet at Chamberlain St. Playground for a quick pick-up game. Being so close to Cameron Village, it’d also make a great park to visit after grabbing a to-go lunch from Harris Teeter or a local restaurant.
Thumbs up: popular basketball courts, close to Cameron Village, shade
Thumbs down: lack of landscaping, nearby water tower, missing park sign
