Join your neighbors, city planners, and the Lake Wheeler Road Advisory Committee on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 9am – 1pm for a public design workshop. The design charrette will be held at Peach Road Community Center, 911 Ileagnes Road, Raleigh, NC. The workshop will help determine a long-range vision for the Lake Wheeler Road corridor, between I-40 to Tryon Road.
Participants will help create a vision for the future of the corridor and be challenged on how to safely accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists. Participants will also help identify and propose potential improvements to enhance the corridor for years to come.
Several stakeholders were organized by the South West Citizens Advisory Committee (SWCAC) to form a temporary Lake Wheeler Road Advisory Committee. Members of this committee met on September 28, 2011 to provide transportation planners with initial concerns. These concerns were captured and allowed transportation planners to prepare for the upcoming charrette. The notes from this meeting are below.

Lake Wheeler Advisory Committee Notes – September 28, 2011
Committe comments:
- Interest in roadway amenities including sidewalks, bike accommodations, bus stop benches/shelters that will serve the neighborhood.
- Interest in slowing traffic and improvements to Lake Wheeler that will retain character as a neighborhood street.
- Interest in downgrading Lake Wheeler to a Minor Thoroughfare to remove required 90 foot right-of-way and 5-lane roadway design. Prefer a 3-lane section or 2-lane divided with sidewalks where achievable without additional encroachment on existing residential lots.
- Residents observed that kids cross Lake Wheeler at Lineberry intersection to go to Carolina Pines Community Center. Additional traffic from developing apartments may increase need for light at this location.
- Unsafe turnaround at Lawrence Drive. Also turning conflicts with convenience store driveway on Lake Wheeler. Resident at North West corner concerned about loss of property for improvements.
- Excess paving on Lake Wheeler (development required road widening) at new apartment sites being used for parking due to overflow from onsite parking.
- Misalignment of Evergreen and Ramsgate. Is this a problem and are there opportunities to resolve?
- Like recently installed landscaping treatments on Tryon Road and S. Wilmington Street. Group would like to have a landscaping package included with any pedestrian or roadway improvements.
Follow up for charette:
- What roadway improvements are being installed with the Lineberry apartment development on Lake Wheeler? 1/2 of a 5 lane section or fee-in-lieu? (Street Maintenance)
- Identify driveway locations and street intersections on Lake Wheeler to help determine where medians can be installed. (Transportation Operations)

- Traffic counts on Lake Wheeler, South Saunders, Wilmington, and Gorman. Have they been widened to designated standard? (OTP)

- Investigate turn-around movement at Lawrence Dr intersection with Lake Wheeler Road (Transportation Operations)
- Prepare warrant study for traffic signal at Lineberry and Lake Wheeler. (Transportation Operations)
- Explore use of excess paving at apartment sites on Lake Wheeler Road for residents parking. (OTP/Transportation Operations)
- Provide maps for zoning and future land use in the area. (Urban Design Center)
- Provide turning movement counts at Lineberry, Sierra, and Carolina Pines Ave. (Transportation Operations)
- Provide large scale map (~1”=50’) with existing right-of-way, buildings, pavement, and water bodies for conceptual roadway design drawings. (Urban Design Center)
