The karate class previously shown has moved to Biltmore Hills Community Center while Carolina Pines is undergoing renovation. We are still having classes, and we will start a new round of beginner’s classes, with no previous experience necessary, in January 2012.
Classes will start with a free week of demonstration and introduction, as before. The classes will be on Tuesday the 3rd and on Thursday the 5th of January, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, at the Biltmore Hills Community Center main building. There will also be demonstrations of advanced technique and students will learn some basics of Wado-Ryu Karate, a traditional Okinawan style martial arts. The instructors each have 9 years of experience in the discipline, and a teaching record of 4 years. They have been teaching Wado-Ryu to the Southwest Raleigh area since June of 2011.
The full class will consist of basic moving drills, stances, punches, kicks, and combos. As students advance, the emphasis will be on Kata (prearranged sets of movements approximating a fight with multiple opponents). More advanced students will also be introduced to Kumite (one step attack and counter-attack with a partner) and free-sparring.
For anyone who wants to join after the first week, the beginning class will continue for three months, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30PM. Classes are $40 per month, and students will have a one-time fee for their karate uniform (Gi) of approximately $30. After the first three months, students can transition into a more advanced class and start testing in belt ranks. we have spaces for about 12 more students, so get in while you can!
This is a teen and adult class, and the instructors have had students in their teens, twenties, thirties, and sixties. The age limit is preferably 16 and up, but kids from 12 to 15 will also be accepted on an individual basis. Parents are welcome and encouraged to come practice with their kids. It’s a great way to de-stress from work and get back in shape!
Come out to watch the demonstration on January 3rd and 5th. If you want to join in, come dressed in workout clothes. If you can’t make the demonstration, just let the instructors know when you do come, and you will still be able to try the class out for a free week. If you can’t attend this time at all, but want to try later, we will have our next introductory class starting in April.
