With the recent rain we’ve had in the Raleigh area, the spillway at Lake Johnson has been converted into a roaring waterfall. From the large rocks at the base of the spillway, the rushing water creates a waterfall that you don’t have to go to the mountains to see.
From the top of the dam, you miss the full beauty of this hidden gem. If you explore some, you’ll get an awesome view. And if you’re adventurous, you can get pretty close to the water (safely). There is even a park bench on the South East side of the spillway where you can enjoy the view.
If you’re interested in seeing the awesome scenery, park at the Lake Dam Road lot and use the by-pass greenway. Once you get to the bridge, you’ll see a silver gate. Start going up the former greenway trail and look for a dirt path on the right. You’ll be just steps away from a great view, right here in Raleigh’s Creative District.
