The buzz around Little Raleigh Radio is stirring the airwaves. The kickstarter campaign has already been met with just under a week to go. The ambitious goal to bring open source, community radio to Downtown Raleigh has just been amplified.
Little Raleigh Radio is a new educational non-profit raising funds through crowd-funding platform Kickstarter and has support from local inventive culture space Designbox. The groups first fundraiser has already surpassed their $10,000 goal. Psst, you can still contribute!
The next volunteer meeting, which is open to the public, is on August 27 from 7:30 – 9 pm at Kings Barcade at 14 W. Martin Street. Anyone interested in becoming a part of this new open source venture in downtown Raleigh should attend.
Kelly Reid and Jacob Downey, founders of Little Raleigh Radio, are steering the organization’s vision to define the creative message of new media. All volunteers will be given the opportunity to become creators and producers of their own Raleigh relevant content. Reid and Downey believe that everyone, given the right tools, has the potential to become a vital part of their community through interaction, education, and support. The organization is focusing their first fundraiser on buying equipment so that the volunteers will have the proper tools to make radio.
The organization wants to get the word out about community radio coming to Downtown but they also want to gather interest in ideas and stories of Raleigh.
“People will see that we are starting this station with open ears and open doors. People and places are what make Raleigh alive,” said Reid. “Our job is to simply give them a mic. This is about hearing where you are.”
“It’s about planting a seed,” said Reid. “I love Raleigh. I want to plant something for my city that outgrows me and belongs to everyone. I want to teach people how to make radio.”
One of their biggest needs Little Raleigh Radio has is broadcast studio equipment. Downey explains, “Kelly and I wanted to make sure that a fundraiser like Kickstarter fueled the right kind of project. Every dollar we raise comes from an individual, and that individual gets a thank-you incentive for donating to the project. But it doesn’t stop there. Being able to make radio that is inspired by the community and in doing so use the equipment that is paid for by the community will be a constantly humbling and energizing experience. I think our volunteers will feel that way too.”
If you haven’t given to the campaign yet, consider a pledge before it’s too late. And literally, stay tuned.
