If someone seems suspicious based on conversation, their activity, or if something just tells you that a situation doesn’t seem right, report the person and/or vehicle by calling 911.
Upon dialing 911, a telecommunicator from the call center will answer the line and ask you for your name, and the location of your emergency. After stating your name and where you are, tell them quickly about what you have seen.
- Describe the physical features of the suspicious person in as much detail as possible
- Provide a clothing description so that the responding officer can quickly locate the person
- Give a brief account of what the person is doing that makes them seem suspicious to you
- Tell the telecommunicator if there has been a crime trend in your neighborhood that may increase the likelihood that this suspicious person might be engaging in criminal behavior (i.e. burglaries, vehicle break-ins).
- Get a license plate number from the vehicle the person is driving. Also, provide as much information about the vehicle as possible.
Remember, the more information you can provide to the telecommunicator increases the odds that the suspicious person will be quickly located by the responding officer once they arrive in the area where you witnessed the suspicious activity.
Help us prevent a crime rather than respond to one after it has happened.
