If you’ve been in Raleigh for at least a year, then you know that food trucks have made a lot of progress over the past few months. Sunday, May 12 proved that people in Downtown Raleigh and from around the Triangle really love food trucks.
Over 40 food trucks featuring BBQ, burgers, pizza, crepes, desserts, and much more, took over Fayetteville Street on Mother’s Day—and thousands of people showed up to support it and indulge. And the event will return on the weekend before Father’s day for the second of four rodeo’s.
Of course, the popular food trucks like Chirba Chirba, Only Burger, Klausie’s Pizza, American Meltdown, and others had extended lines. But that presented a great opportunity for food truck seekers to discover something new. Avoid the line and try a new cuisine. And I’ll be honest with you, I did see some overflow head into local brick and mortar restaurants. There is no doubt that places like Raleigh Times, Big Easy, The Oxford, Isaac Hunters, Bolt, and many others benefited from the food truck rodeo.
I brought my mom who was in town for my book release party over the weekend. Yep, for those of you who don’t know, I buckled down and wrote a book about the open government and open data movement in Raleigh. She had never scene anything like this before. The closest thing would be the North Carolina State Fair, which doesn’t compare to the food truck goodness that comes with a rodeo like this. I would wager that many people who ventured to North Carolina’s downtown for this event experienced something new, and something that want to do again.
