A public workshop attracted almost 50 people on Tuesday, November 19 at Carolina Pines Community Park. Residents from the community and members from the Citizen Planning Committee had an opportunity to participate in several visualization exercises to help determine the future direction of a proposed 2.4 acre park located at Sierra Drive and Lineberry Drive. Park staff & consultants helped guide and capture the conversations and collected written feedback.
One of the first visualization exercises was a topographical map with an outline of the park boundaries that allowed attendees to “build” concepts that they likes. Popular items included a walking trail around the perimeter, some component of a community garden, a small playground, a multi-purpose pavilion, and a Bocce court. There were mixed feelings about a half-court basketball court.
Attendees also helped to identify desires and amenities for the park. Natural areas, tree protection areas, open space, bike amenities, and pedestrian amenities—crosswalks near the park and benches.
Another visualization exercise was to identify different park uses and “tag” a collection of visual aids. People were asked to select up to five images, using sticky dots, on how they would like to see this proposed park be developed based on the visual aids. The park staff and consultants will assist the Citizen Planning Committee in validating some the themes developed at our first session held in October, and see where the alignment was with this visual exercise.
There were a few other ways to provide feedback and learn about the project. There were feedback forms for people to provide written comments about the future of the park. Then, there were several documents, printed out, available for attendees to review:
Next steps include a Citizen Planning Committee meeting in January 2014 and the second workshop to gather community feedback in February 2014. Visit the park’s webpage and sign up to receive updates about the Sierra/Lineberry Drive Park Master Plan.
