The Carolina Pines Dog Park located on Lake Wheeler Road is closed until further notice due to tornado damage. There are 20 to 30 large trees down, and another 5 or 6 leaning or hung up that pose serious safety concerns. Once the trees are removed, the fence will take some time (at least a month) to be repaired before the paprk can reopen. Currently, tree crews are clearing higher priority areas around the city, and will clear the fallen trees from the dog park once those other areas have been taken care of. The ball fields, tennis courts, and volleyball courts are still open and did not sustain any significant damage.
In the mean time, Oakwood Dog Park and Millbrook Dog Park are excellent dog parks that are also run by the city that are available to use free of charge. Oakwood Dog park is very similar in size and feel to Carolina Pines Dog Park, and is located about a mile northeast of Downtown Raleigh close to the Krispy Kreme, and Millbrook Dog Park is located in North Raleigh on Spring Forest Road and has large lights allowing it to stay open until 10PM. Directions can be found at each respective website.
You can follow the latest news on tree removal, fence repairs, possible volunteer opportunities and ensuing opening on the Carolina Pines Dog Park Facebook page. You can go to the site now and see some photos of the damage.
