We come across a lot of interesting people here in Raleigh’s Creative District. And it’s not uncommon to meet someone who chooses to live, work, shop, and explore in Southwest Raleigh. This is the case for Whitney Johnson, a resident and business owner in the Creative District. She lives in one of our many vibrant communities, started a business here, and is now seeing her business grow after relocating to Downtown Raleigh.
I got a chance to catch-up with Whitney over email to learn more about her business and why she chose to set-up shop in Raleigh’s Creative District. I think you’ll find that many of the reasons why you love Southwest Raleigh are similar to Whitney’s. But you may be surprised as to why Whitney thinks her business is growing.

Interview
1) Tell our readers about your business.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have a Private Practice in downtown Raleigh near Cameron Village and Glenwood South. I have been practicing as a therapist since 2005 in various settings and really enjoy working as a helping professional. I see teenage and adult clients for individual, couples, and family counseling. Clients I see may be experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, grief, loss, or difficulties in their relationships. I aim to help my clients successfully navigate difficult life transitions and strengthen their strained relationships. Life is tough, and I am honored to walk beside people during difficult times. I really enjoy helping people experience better relationships, live with less anxiety and depression, and learn to grieve in healthy ways.
2) Why did you move your business to downtown Raleigh?
I truly enjoy downtown Raleigh and Raleigh’s Creative District. I love spending time there: the local businesses, the warm, delightful people, the delicious local food! I love the growth that is happening in these areas and I desired to be apart of a thriving, welcoming, innovative community. I also wanted to live, work, and play in the same small radius. My husband works downtown, we live in the Creative District, and one day hope to be able to walk to work. We spend most of our fun time downtown or in the Creative District, so it made sense that I would plant my business and hopefully continue to grow in that area!
3) How has your business grown over the past year?
I started my own business in August of 2010 and have seen steady growth since going out on my own. I have seen continued steady growth since moving downtown in August 2011. I continue to meet with new clients and see my current clients experience healing, growth, and change. Many clients have commented on the central location of my office, as well as the great coffee shops and local restaurants that are convenient to them here. I’ve also started seeing many more clients that live or work downtown or in the Creative District and they like the convenience of my office to their offices or homes. It’s an exciting time!
4) What is your favorite part about Raleigh’s Creative District?
My husband got his Master’s Degree at NC State, so he lived in this area when we met and married. We continue to live in and love the Creative District. We have grown to love the vibrancy that NC State brings to the District. It is such a great area of diversity of people from other cultures and ages. We also enjoy heading to the Farmers market on the weekends; we got a perfect Christmas tree from there! We love our neighbors and feel we are in a real community. There is always something exciting to explore or experience and we love taking advantage of those things in the Creative District.
