Rebus Works is pleased to present FLOW, an installation by Bill Hickman consisting of 500 metal birds on our gallery wall. Based on a bird medallion taken from a 1950s screen door, Hickman cut multiple copies from 20 gauge sheet steel then hammered, welded, painted and mounted the birds to create a flowing motion. The exhibition will run through December 24, 2013 and is on view Tuesday through Friday from 11-6 and Saturdays from 11-4pm.
This exhibition will also be on view during the Boylan ArtWalk on Sunday, December 8 from noon to 5pm.
FLOW: “A mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity if fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does. Repetition can be boring, so I’ve adopted the approach that I used for making multiple masks with the aim of getting as many variations as I can from a repeated object.” -Bill Hickman
About Bill Hickman
While working at Raleigh’s Ratskellar restaurant for eighteen years, he found time to follow his passion for making sculpture. He taught himself new welding and painting techniques and made objects that reflected his reality at the time. During this time he also amassed a collection of more than 100 books on art history and artist biographies. Picasso’s work is still a major influence.
Hickman was accepted as a member of Artspace, INC in 1989 where he rented a studio until 1991. He is currently a member of the American Craft Council, Piedmont Craftsmen and Carolina Designer Craftsmen.
Hickman continues making sculpture in his Five Points neighborhood backyard welding studio in the Raleigh.
