A recent conversation with Alison Carpenter, the Transportation Planner/Wolftrails Manager with North Carolina State University’s Transportation Office, indicated that a major gap in the Capital Greenway System across Centennial Campus received funds for construction.
The University has recently received federal funds to construct Phase II of the Greenway Project on Centennial Campus. The $290,000+ in federal STP-DA dollars from the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) will help NC State initiate these projects as soon as Summer 2011. Lynn Swank with North Carolina State University’s Design & Construction Services, is in charge of the construction schedule.
The Design Index Sheet demonstrates segments L-101 through L-107 across Centennial Campus along Walnut Creek and Lake Raleigh. L103 and L104 were completed several years ago during Phase I. For Phase II, L105 through L107 (The Middle Walnut Creek connector) will link up from the Main Campus Dr/Acheivement Dr tunnel to the tunnel under Lake Wheeler Rd.
Further, L101 through L102 (the Upper Walnut Creek connector) will begin at the existing Centennial trail where it terminates near Campus Shore, and end at the NC State property line, a quarter mile shy of the existing Greenway Trail terminus at Trailwood Drive that connects to Lake Johnson. The North Carolina State University Transportation Office is currently working with the City of Raleigh and private land owners on closing this remaining gap.
Good to hear. I think there’s also some CAMPO funding to extend the North Creek trail from just north of Varsity Drive to Avent Ferry Road.

This is excellent news! It will be terrific to have the missing links filled in. Will pass this along to the folks at the Walnut Creek Wetland Center and Partners for Environmental Justice which is also Friends of Walnut Creek Park. With Friends of Lake Johnson, the Triangle Greenways Council and the City of Raleigh’s Parks and Recreation Department we’re getting ready for the first Celebration of Walnut Creek – A Festival in Motion, on October 1, 2011. It will feature a portion of the Walnut Creek Greenway east from South Saunders Street, but in years to come we anticipate it being all along the way from Lake Johnson to the Neuse River, popped out with a hot air ballon or kite flying festival on top of Dix Hill. We’ll have food, fun, physical challenges and feature the natural and cultural heritage of the Creek and its environs. Save the date!
