In late March, the Southwest District assembled a community policing squad made up of one sergeant and three officers. According to Captain P.A. Niemann, commander of the Southwest District, the squad’s goal is to find long-term solutions to recurring problems within specific areas in the district. They will undertake a multi-faceted and inter-agency approach to the district’s challenges, often using education and prevention as well as enforcement.
“Rest assured that Southwest District neighborhoods will still be patrolled by regular beat officers, who should be considered the immediate response for in-progress crimes,” said Captain Niemann. “Please continue to call 9-1-1 to report crimes or suspicious circumstances that are in progress. However, with the addition of this community policing squad, our district can now more effectively focus on the ongoing quality-of-life issues that often challenge the district. If your neighborhood suffers from recurring issues, please make our community policing squad aware of them.”
