The rental registration program seems to be very successful for both landlords and tenants throughout Raleigh. The program has been in effect for just over a year now and the City of Raleigh has been promoting the registration through various educational tools including landlord training programs.
For tenants, it hopefully ensures responsible management from the landlord or property management company. For landlords, it gives the city a way to contact them for a variety of reasons including public safety and inspections compliance. The benefit to all citizens is providing a safe living environment for residents and neighbors.
The City has a good set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about registering rental property. The FAQs outline why landlords should register, the fee schedule, and most importantly, how to register [PDF].
If you’re a landlord and you’ve previously registered your property, it’s that time of year to renew your registration. If you’re a tenant, you should remind your landlord to renew to help them avoid any fines. More information about renewing is below.
RENTAL REGISTRATION PROGRAM ANNUAL RENEWALS TO BEGIN MARCH 1
The City of Raleigh’s rental registration program renewal will begin again on March 1. All landlords in Raleigh are required to register their rental property with the City of Raleigh.
All rental properties are required to be registered, regardless of the number of units. The registration period will be open until April 30. Landlords who are not available to respond to City of Raleigh Inspections Department, Fire Department or Raleigh Police Department are required to designate a representative who lives within 25 miles of the City’s planning jurisdiction who can be contacted 24 hours a day; seven days a week should any problems occur.
The registration and renewal fee is $30 for the first unit registered by a property owner and $10 for each additional unit registered located on the same parcel/lot. For more information, contact Housing and Environmental Inspections at (919) 807-5110.
