Motorists traveling in west Raleigh on Saturday morning, June 9, are urged to watch for several temporary road closures and heavy traffic conditions as several thousand runners take to the streets for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
All participants in the race are being asked to park at PNC Arena, and pre-race traffic in the area is expected to be heavy beginning at 5:30 a.m. when shuttle buses start transferring runners from the arena over to Meredith College, where the races will begin and end. The first 5-kilometer race gets under way at 7 a.m. along Hillsborough Street across from the college. There will also be a 5K race on the same course at 7:45 and again at 8:45 a.m., as well as one-mile run at 9:30 a.m.
Hillsborough Street will be closed from Beryl Road to Gorman Street from 5 to 11 a.m. Other roads being used for the event are:
- Gardner Street;
- Clark Avenue;
- Brooks Avenue;
- Barmettler Street;
- Dixie Trail;
- Faircloth Street; and
- Gorman Street.
Shuttle buses will continue to run between PNC Arena and Meredith College until 12:30 p.m. so motorists should also expect heavy traffic after the races in the area of the PNC Arena, along with I-440, Wade Avenue, Blue Ridge Road and Trinity Road.
