Uncovering Southwest Raleigh’s launch party last night was a huge success. The room was full of people from Southwest Raleigh and beyond—over 120 people attended the kickoff. Attendee’s were eager to shape the future of where we live, work, learn, and play in Raleigh’s Creative District.

The session was opened by Councilor Thomas Crowder and remarks were shared by Mayor Nancy McFarlane and Marvin Malecha, Dean, College of Design, NC State University. The physical and economic development of Southwest Raleigh over the next decade will be influenced by the results and efforts started at this event.

The study overview was introduced by Arthur Rice, Associate Dean for Graduate and International Studies, College of Design, NC State University and Dr. Kwesi Craig Brookins, Psychology and Africana Studies, NC State University conducted the interactive work session.

The interactive work session included a series of activities and questions that everyone in the room participated in answering. The innovative “remote control” crowd response provided immediate results that the audience could use to further the discussion in our small groups.  We discussed where we work, how we identify our area, where we eat, and how we describe our area. And the feedback was instantly shown on the screens after 15-seconds of voting time.

The next steps will be rolling out in the next few months. It includes meeting with Citizen Advisory Councils (CACs), home owner associations (HOA’s), and other community organizations. We’ll be posting opportunities on southwestraleigh.com on future Uncovering Southwest Raleigh events so that you can participate. We also recommend you follow the study site for the latest updates and follow them on Twitter: UncoveringSWR.
